HOMETOWN HEROES ...

Davis, Graham both staying close to home in OVC
Hillsboro’s Jamontae Davis and Father Ryan’s Jamonte Graham have both committed to Tennessee State in basketball.
Davis, a 6-foot-8 senior forward, missed most of his junior season after sustaining injuries in an auto accident.
Lipscomb, Middle Tennessee State, Mercer and Murray State also made him offers.
“I wanted to stay close to my family,” Davis said. “That was my main choice. And the coaches are so energetic. TSU is like a big family.”
Davis broke his foot and wrist on the way to a jamboree last year. He only played in the last 46 seconds of a Region 6-AAA game against Hunters Lane.
“It was pretty frustrating,” Davis said. “Usually I don’t watch basketball because if I watch it that makes me want to play. But the injuries did give me a chance to watch and learn the game. I was very worried (it would hurt my college chances.)”
Davis averaged 15 points during the district and region tournaments as a sophomore.
“He is a natural scorer and one of the most coachable kids I have ever had,” Hillsboro coach Rodney Thweatt said. “With those two attributes, I think the sky is the limit for Jamontae.”
Graham, a 6-1 senior point guard, averaged 18.8 points, four rebounds and four assists last season.
His older brother, Jamie, played football at Vanderbilt and UCLA before becoming an assistant basketball coach at Hillsboro.
Graham and Davis both played on Carlton Batttle’s travel team in Nashville.
“We’ve been playing against each other and with each other since we were in junior pro, and now with both of us committing to TSU it will be really good for us,” Graham said.”It will be good for me to have a guy that I’m already familiar with. Playing with him will be like old times.”
