WHAT'S UP WITH CORN???

Coach Al Golden said after Wednesday's practice that the team hasn't determined if Dallas Crawford will get a similar amount of reps to Duke Johnson or if the team will go with a running back-by-committee approach.

"His role is what it has been - he's carried the load in games before," Golden said. "We're going to keep evaluating and see who has earned what reps in the game and go from there."

He added "You'll see all three of those guys in the game (including Eduardo Clements and Gus Edwards)."

Golden said there is no set No. 2 back behind Crawford right now, as Clements and Edwards are battling.

* Asked if Duke Johnson could return for a bowl game off ankle surgery, Golden said, "I don't believe so. I'd hate to comment without having a medical standpoint, but I don't believe so."

* Golden pointed to youngster Corn Elder as a young leader on this team, saying he "clearly stands out."

"Guys like Quan Muhammad, the moment wasn't too big for him last Saturday and he was a leader," Golden said. "There are a lot of young guys that are stepping up."

Golden also mentioned Nantambu Fentress as a leader that hasn't been mentioned previously.

Can the staff teach players to be leaders?

"You have to cultivate the leadership," Golden said. "There's no question that some people gravitate towards it earlier in life, but it may be because of sociological factors, they didn't have some challenges other people did. But I don't think there's any question you can cultivate leadership, and that's evidenced by a lot of guys on our team that have grown in that role. There are born leaders, but you have to cultivate them, and they have to share the same vision and messaging as the head coach because it has to be uniform."

* Golden said the team has no plans to move Elder from defense to running back - he'd never played cornerback in high school.

* The team tracks mental errors by player and unit. And Golden says the mental mistakes are "half of where we were a year ago."

He adds that a strong team like FSU can make the errors show up moreso than against other opponents.

"Guys are getting more comfortable, guys have more experience, are playing with more poise - we need that," Golden said.

Golden added that "we saw some errors in that (FSU) game that were uncharacteristic of some players. And it's either a function of losing your poise or trying too hard - `I have to make this play!' And really what you have to do is do your job. If what they call over there allows you to make a play, have the confidence to make a play. But you have to do your job. So if you're running the corner route it needs to be eight steps. If you're in pass protection you need to block your man, not think you have to block three men. Hopefully we learned a lot from that (at FSU)."

* Golden said of Deon Bush that "We really haven't seen him yet (at full strength). He's getting better. Physically there should be no issue, but clearly there was a learning curve coming back after being out for so long. I'm anxious to see that. We haven't seen a fury from him like we saw last year where he was so poised and confident that he was flying around … He's getting better with his calls, his comfort level."

* Golden said the team never considered redshirting WR Rashawn Scott.

"He's got to play - we only have five receivers in the rotation, six on scholarship," Golden said. "He's getting better every day, has helped us on special teams the last two weeks."
